For Blog post IV, I thought we would take a small detour. In our first class together I challenged each of you to make the most of your final year here at St. Saviour. We are a month and a half in and I thought this TED talk would help serve to help remind us of what it takes to be successful. The video we watched in class was provocative and informative. For this post do one of the following:
- Pick one the eight qualities you believe you possess and discuss how it has helped you
- Or consider one quality you lack and how you intend on improving it
- Or describe someone who is inspiring to you and what about them are you drawn to
3. One quality I see myself lacking is assertiveness. Sometimes I find myself in situations where I know the answer or I know what to do but instead of putting myself forward I wait to be called upon or not at all. I believe if I had this quality I prosper in life: socially, spiritually, and educationally. Socially: I'd have a lot more to say in social gatherings and befriend more people. Spiritually: I'd go further in my religious studies, and my inner-being. Educationally: I'd go out of my way more in my classes and have more participation.
ReplyDeleteOut of the eight topics in the TED talk I feel like I possess is passion. I've always been taught by my parents that no matter what, do something you love and you will enjoy your life and your job. I've always been told that I should never be a teacher because teachers make no money. Even though I hear the same thing all the time I still feel like there is nothing else in the world I would want to do. I've always dreamed of being a teacher; I never gave up my dream because I always knew it was my passion and my calling to do it. As much as I hate getting up in the morning to go to school almost every day, I never stop because I know its going to help me do what I have to do to be successful and to do what I LOVE to do and NOT what others like to do.
ReplyDeleteOne of the eight qualities I believe I possess, which has been mentioned in the TED Talk, is pushing myself out of my comfort zone. It feels uncomfortable, which shows me I'm doing something right. The people that I love, especially my mom, has been pushing me to get higher grades in school. Before, I would just settle, and not study longer or come up with better study habits to get a higher grade on my tests. Even when we are given essay assignments, I procrastinate in the beginning, but when I have a week or a few days before the due date, I push myself to get that paper done. When the teacher asks for anything, I don't just do what they ask for, I go one jump ahead. If I push myself or others push me, it feels tiring but worth it. I get the job done and strive even further. If I always push myself, not only would I be ahead of others in the medical field, but I would have a broader mindset and be more successful. Throughout my whole educational career, ever since 3rd grade, I always asked questions in class if I wanted to clarify something. They weren't unnecessary questions of course. That made me ahead of my classmates. I received the Principal's Award in 4th grade because I worked my butt off. My teachers encouraged me, and the students that were jealous of me, made me work even harder. I used their jealousy to my advantage. I was also in the Aquinas Club in middle school. The projects required a lot of work, but me and my peers pushed through to get the job done before the day of the competition. I just need to keep on pushing myself to the best of my abilities and never settle for anything less.
ReplyDeleteIf I have to consider one quality I lack, this is for sure the capacity of pushing myself. In the TED video, David Gallo says, "Push yourself. Physically, mentally, you've got to push, push, push." You've got to push through shyness and self-doubt. In many situations, especially when I'm surrounded by people I don't really know, it's difficult for me to "push through shyness and self-doubt". Nevertheless, I'm aware that making a run is always worth it, both for you who try and for the ones who listen and who can profit from your ideas, even if you think they are useless or stupid. I think the best way of improving it is just to try, to make a run and to avoid thinking too much about whether your opinions can be good or not.
ReplyDeleteI believe one of the qualities I possess is doing something out of love. If you don't do something out of love and just for money, you aren't really happy. A paycheck can always fluctuate and change; The pay could raise or decrease. You can never really enjoy yourself in life if you don't love to do what you do and just do it for rewards. Rewards are always nice but, they are not the reason for being in that profession.
ReplyDeleteI have considered that I lack is pushing myself out of my boundary. I feel uncomfortable when I do something that I'm not really use to. I feel as if I'm not myself when I have to push myself. One thing I possess is passion. When I am passionate about something I stick to it. I do something that I am passionate about not because I have to, but because I really love it.
ReplyDeleteOne of the hardest things to do, is push yourself to new boundaries and experiences. If you can't push yourself, other things in life may be hard to do. David Gallo, motivates his audience to push themselves to become better people. I intend on improving this quality by trying to push through self doubt and believe that I am capable of the task ahead. I often procrastinate and choose not to put in the effort rather than "push through" the task and try to figure out and get the task done. I think that surrounding yourself with positive people and those who motivate you and help you are going to help with your success.
ReplyDeleteOne quality that I definitely lack is focusing. I get distracted very easily because I allow myself to. I don't want to do my work so suddenly anything becomes more interesting than the task at hand. Maybe if i started doing work in an isolated area, with my phone away from me, I would be able to improve my focusing skills

Delete3. one person I find inspiring to me is my own mother. She is hardworking person who doesn't give up on herself or others. She tries to be her best, and succeeds at this. She gives me a sense of hope that one day I can be like her.
