Why no cell phones in class?

Let's start a discussion with why from a professional's point of view.

Simon Sinek is a marketing expert and motivational speaker. In this recent talk he discussed the issues about mobile technologies and their impact on generations of people having grown up on them.

For our conversation let's consider what happens during the stages of adolescence...

So for our blog post what is your reaction to the video. Then consider our school phone policy. Is it appropriate, fair, or unfair? What would you recommend the school implement if you were in charge?

  1. After I watched the video, I agreed with it only for the fact that I believe that many of us lack social skills and it puts damage onto friendships and family relationships. I feel like the school phone policy is fair but also unfair at the same time. I feel that it is fair because we shouldn't be using our phones in class because it should be only a learning environment, but I feel that we should be able to use our phones on any free period we have because its free time to do what we want as long as we are following the school rules of behavior.

  2. I feel like the cell phone policy, it is fair, to a certain point. Knowing my classmates for 4 years now, I feel that the no cell phone rules *during school hours* is fair, however it isn't strict enough. Many times I've seen people use their phones during class, at lunch, in the computer lab many times to count. Sure you can take away a phone, but as long they can get it back, they will keep using it. More often than not, they use their phones to communicate to each other while in different classes using snap chat.
What we need to do is revamp the phone rules, because I don't want to go to a school that bans cell phones entirely. First, the classrooms should be highly monitored to prevent students from using their phones during class times. Any phones seen will be taken and will not be given back until a parent picks it up. Cell phones should be used before the 8:00 bell and after the 3:35 bell. Having phones during this time is a gift and should be taken away when the rules are not followed. This cell phone problem doesn't come from the fact that we are millennials, this phone problem comes from the lack of respect to the rules as a whole.
This video proves that the lack of respect towards the rules means that no one will follow the rule. IT shouldn't have to take 3 times to threaten people to take their phones, it should be instantaneous.

  3. I agreed with the video only because we are lacking social skills and not getting that feeling of connection when face to face to someone else. Sure it feels good to get likes on a picture and communicating through social media, but it's not the same. The school's cell phone policy is fair because school is a place to socialize with your classmates and a time to learn. But it's unfair too, we should use our phones before classes start and at the end of the day. They should be used during frees also, but of course still following school regulations.

  4. I think that after watching the video that our school phone policy is both fair and unfair. I say this because I think that we should be able to use our phones before 8am and after we are dismissed along with that we should at least be aloud to use our phones on our frees. But also considering certain rules to follow the schools code. I also do believe that we do lack of social skills because of this but taking away phones completely won't help rather it would make most to rebel against the rule.

  5. I don’t agree with the video entirely that the new generation today is lacking in social skills and are unable to communicate without our phones. I can live without my phone as well as many other people that I know, however it is easier to communicate faster with my friends which is the only reason why I use my phone. I also feel that previous generations talk down on technology because they don’t know how to use it themselves; instead of bashing on kids who grow up with technology, learn how to use it yourself. I agree with the no phones rule because phones shouldn’t be used constantly and especially during school, besides too much of something can’t be good even if it is seen as helpful. Overall, I didn’t agree with the speaker and how he makes it seem like kids today are going to grow up brain-dead because they use technology.

  6. I agree with the Video some people lack social skills because everyone is texting nowadays. Many people never call a person. I do think that its is rude to be on their phone when I am talking to them, it shows me they are not interested. I think the no phone policy is fair and unfair. Its fair because students don't need to have there phone out in class. It is unfair because once you walk into school you can't use your phones. It should be once the warning bell rings you put away your phone and then you can't use it until dismissal bell.

  7. I agree with the video because most people now adays are glued to their phones and fail to realize what the world is and what it has to offer. There is so much to life and people abuse that by texting their friends and using apps 24/7. I find our school policy fair because we shouldn't be using it during class. However, I think we should be able to use it on our free, but some people would abuse this.

  8. i agree with the video in the area of social skills, people do tend to pay closer attention to their phones rather than to what's surrounding them. some feel the need to check their phones every 5 or 10 minutes, especially in class. but I do think there are a rare few that can hold out on that. i think our school policy is fair just because, it's school. what else are we supposed to be doing besides learning.
